I’m Covered in SPAM!

For some reason, in the last few days, the comment SPAMmers out there have been just pounding this site. Why? Beats me…don’t they know that not many people actually read this site? The worst part of this recent mess is that I have MT Blacklist (the web app that houses a list of known spammer and blocks them.) installed! In fact some of the IP’s of the spammers that have hit me today come from IPs that Blacklist should be blocking. So now I have to add IPs to the Blacklist’s list and to the internal MovableType IP blocking list. What a pain in the ass.

Have any of your blogs been hit this hard recently? And if you happen to be running MT-Blacklist, does it work? It sure isn’t for me.

  • You know what? I like it.

Wanna be Hell Yeah Bitch .com's PR / Advertising head?
  • "HellYeahBitch.com - If it's good enough for Playboy, it's good enough for you!"
  • hummm.... how could you incorporate the playboy spam into your cafeshops.com stuff? you know there's an opportunity there someplace.
  • Now thats some good thinkn'!
  • maybe if you bitch loud enough you can squeeze a free subscription out of them.
  • Now I seem to be getting SPAM from playboy magazine. However, it does appear that the spam blocker built into MT is working better than the MT-Blacklist.
  • Yeah, that is pretty weird. I've been taking a look at your blog, looks good. But weirdness like that is bound to happen with all of these open-source blogging tools. I've never found one that is perfect.
  • plog is turning out a bit better than b2evolution. found myself a nice template and the user interface is mostly-straightforward. Some things are broken, though. You can add a new template, but in the 'delete template' page there is nothing listed even though there's 5 installed.
  • Yeah, my blog has been hit lately with comment spam, mainly on my older topics. I'm using WordPress, and I have a spam filter in place, with a few other techniques.

One way that I stopped this most recent spam on my old posts, was to install a plugin to WordPress, that automatically shuts off my comments after a certain number of days. I set it to 7 days, so posts older than that cannot be commented on anymore.
  • Well thanks for visiting...I need to have those people. I have a few sites that I don't think are hugely popular hat I frequent and I'm sure they appreciate me too.

Anyway, I do try my best to delete the spam as soon as I see it. Plus they always seem to spam posts that are a few months old. Weird since they are old posts noone really sees them near as much as the other or bigger posts, so whats the point of spamming if noone sees it?

So, I'm not stalking or anything, but I check this site along with slashdot, fark, and a few others a few times daily (ah, the life of a codemonkey with a net connection). I've not ever see any comment spam here. Do you delete it a few minutes after it arrives? (btw, happy 102nd comment)
