Free DNS and VPN

I’ve moved into my new place (mostly). It sucked having to move all the stuff and set things up. I still have a few things to get done. I need to get a TV stand, get my bar made and a few shevles but thats it. I have the fast internet connection going strong, and I just need one more plug and then I’ll have both (Windows and Linux servers) up and running sucking power in my house and maximizing my electricity bill. With all that done, my attention, once again, turns to geekier thoughts.

I would love to be able to be able to work with my local linux web server, it could prove to be useful at my job, taking hacks from other sites I have done and using them in other projects. To do this of course, I would need to get a static IP to be able to connect to my network. I need a free DNS service.

I looked at EveryDNS, and it seems nice. There are others that I looked at but didn’t give me a good feeling and they don’t really seem free. They seem like they would stick it to you after a month into its use.

But EveryDNS might be the winner, unless, you know of any that I don’t know about. Does anyone out there have any experience with any of these services…good or bad? Let me know. Stop me if I’m about to do something stupid. I would love to hear some other’s experiences.

After that gets going…you know what would be really cool? Get a VPN going. Isn’t there open-source VPN software out there for linux? Anyone know anything about that?

  • Yeah, the tabbing is a bit off when I added the NOSPAM feature. Not sure why it does that, but when I added the lines to movable type's cgi script, it just worked that way. I don't know, maybe that helps in SPAM prevention too.

Cool idea with the cron job. That is slick and I'll look into that when I get home tonight. After that, and after I get all my apartment (otherwise know as: "Hell Yeah Bitch World Headquarters") setup, then I'll play with VPN stuff.

    Thanks!
  • Yup, good ole Google yielded the same results for me. But without having much experience, I'm going to take it slow on my VPN ambitions. On the other hand, I might just have to get that DNS a try tonight to see how that works out.

http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/ when you've got a dynamic IP. Has client support for nearly every OS out there. Supposed to be free, but like I said, never used it myself. A google search on 'linux vpn' returned ~2,050,000 hits, so I would say yes, yes there is a vpn client for linux. And like the above, I know nothing about it. I guess this whole comment just goes to show I like to type, wether I know anything or not.
