The Mac You’ve Been Waiting For (maybe)

Accoring to Think Secret, who generally has a fairly high success rate at rumors, Mr. Jobs will be debuting a new sub $500 dollar mac with no included monitor (read: headless).

The proposed specs are: 1.25GHz G4, 40 gig HD, DVI and VGA connectivity, 256MB of RAM, USB 2.0, FireWire 400, 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet, 56K V.92 modem and even AirPort Extreme support, all housed in a flat enclosure with a height similar to the 1.73 inches of Apple’s Xserve.

If this proves to be true I could be pretty excited about this. However, I would hope that there would be a usual Apple 3-tier approach to this new computer. Meaning there is a base and then higher up models with faster chips, bigger HDs and hopefully a DVD burner (also called a SuperDrive in Apple-Speak). If that existed, then I would really go crazy and start saving up immediatlly. Granted, I have wanted a G5 for some time to do video editing and the like, and maybe I should still wait it out of one of those, but that all depends on the price point and whether or not this “headless iMac” will actually ever exist.

Interesting though. (Hell maybe at that price, when my computer at work needs to be upgraded, I could push for one of those).

    well it’s not speedy gonzalez by any means, but it looks like a nice box for the price. Do you think that this could work out nicely for my girlfriend who is a graphic design major? or do I need something with more balls? Seems to me like it wouldn’t have a problem runing some photoshop/ illustrator goodness, but I am not an apple guy. Any suggestions?

    There have been rumblings around the community that this would be too slow. I think that unless you are really doing some very hard photo or some larger videos, then this will be fine.

    My iBook is a 933 MHz and it works fine with Photoshop, all the iLife apps and even Final Cut Express (a larger video app), run just fine. Its not lightning, but it runs it fine.

    My only hope is that its a bit faster and that there is a DVD burner. I would really want one of those…maybe…an iMac would be sweet though.

    Did you read thinksecret just got SUED over this….how can you sue what is basically a newspaper?

    Holy crap…I didn’t hear about that till just now.

    That is messed up. I don’t know that I would sue ThinkSecret just becuase their employees can’t keep their mouth shut….unless their rumors aren’t true.
