The Wireless Rave

What do you do when you want to have a rave but the local community wants you to keep it quiet? Apparently, you buy an ass-load of wireless headphones, pass them out, and have a wireless rave. This isn’t a brand new idea, I’ve heard of other people trying this out, but this seems like the biggest implementation yet. Even though its not a spankin’ new idea, it is still a very cool one.

Think about being involved in one of these things. Rockin to the music with everyone and then just pop your headphones off and looking at all the people swaying to the same beat but you don’t hear a thing.

The idea is undoubtedly cool. But what about the logistics? How do you afford the headphones, and if you are footing the bill, how the hell do you get them back? Also, with a large amount of wireless headphones, would everyone’s music be in sync? I would think the better way to go would not be traditional wireless headphones, but instead get a bunch of FM radio headphones and just make a “pirate” radio station and broadcast over that.

Has anyone been to one of these?

Hackers are the new switchers?

Jason Kottke posted a link to a article from a guy the believes that all the best “hackers” are going back to mac.

With OS X, the hackers are back. When I walked into the Apple store in Cambridge, it was like coming home. Much was changed, but there was still that Apple coolness in the air, that feeling that the show was being run by someone who really cared, instead of random corporate deal-makers.

So what, the business world may say. Who cares if hackers like Apple again? How big is the hacker market, after all?

Quite small, but important out of proportion to its size. When it comes to computers, what hackers are doing now, everyone will be doing in ten years. Almost all technology, from Unix to bitmapped displays to the Web, became popular first within CS departments and research labs, and gradually spread to the rest of the world.

I have to agree. More and more you will see someone on TV giving a demo of some grand computerized idea and they are running it on a G5. Or an interview, and one of those stupid canned shots of him working will flash, and he’ll be on a Powerbook.

I think the rise in popularity isn’t just constrained to the “hacker” community though. I think Apple has done a marvelous job at gaining some ground on both ends of the spectrum, “hackers” and the basic computer user. The one group you don’t see in the Apple stores these days are the mid-level people that are either stuck in their ways with Windows or find the power they need on a cheap Linux box. The high-end users get Unix, and Fink and nice computer thats not a clunky server, the low-end users get a software bundle with all that they need right out of the box and everyone gets solid computing with a pretty face.

Too bad Apple is also driving away some users with their current legal moves.

Why Hell Yeah Bitch.com?

Having operated Hell Yeah Bitch! .com for over two years now, there have been two questions that I am asked or I have asked myself. The question I receive the most is: “Why did you name your site that?!” and the question I have asked myself the most, other than “Should I go with a mohawk?”, is “Should I change the name of my site?”. After having yet another discussion about my name with someone the other day, and the 2nd birthday for my little site in my rear-view mirror, I decided it was way past due for an article that explains myself, and my decision.

Mario Cantone and Ant are the same guy!

Look at this guy…now look at him…same guy right?

A Hell Yeah Bitch Exclusive

Now, maybe I’m the only person that has noticed this because I watch a fair amount of TV. But after catching an episode of Celebrity Fit Club (It was a slow night ok!) and having my girlfriend force me to watch many many episodes of Sex and the City I have come to the following conclusion:

I think Ant and Mario Cantone are the same person.

Think about it, look at the pictures…you know it makes sense. Both are gay, both make jokes about how gay they are. And most telling is the Superman test: Have you ever seen Ant and Mario Cantone next to each other at the same time? Hmm? Have you? I didn’t think so. Now, I’m not going to count seeing them together on TV because they could do that trick that the did in Family Matters where Erkel was cloned and they do that TV trick where they split the screen and show the actor on both sides of the screen. Nope, I’m not going to fall for that crap. I want to see them together, in person before I believe that they are different people. However I know that won’t happen, not because I don’t live in LA mind you, it won’t happen because they are acutally the same person.

Sorry to blow your cover guy(s), I think you are funny, but I just had to get this news out.

Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic

Sarah Silverman is hilarious. I just caught the new trailer for her upcoming show or DVD or tour or something…I’m not sure what its for, but I’m a fan. I’ve never had a chance to see her by herself, she was always with someone else…Jack Black, David Cross, Bob O. (Who is in the clip for a second), but after seeing this she seems to have that same kind of “crossing the line” type humor those guys listed before are into and the same type that I love.

Check out the trailer (link above) and if you like that be sure to check out Mr. Show. Its on DVD now, but she was in a few of those episodes along with about everyone else I listed, and they are all great.

…kinda makes me wonder why she goes out with Jimmy Kimmel.

Fun At The Toy Zoo

Via BoingBoing

A reader at BoingBoing, sent in this link to a place where they take old toys, wash them, and then let people put then back together to make new toys. They even let the maker write up a bit about what powers it has. This is just one of those sites that you seem to just loose track of time looking at it and laughing at the powers.

A little peice of web-nirvana

By the way, the toy pictured is listed with this:

Name: Vinchill
Inventor: Tassy
Age: 9
Comments: He shoots his toenails at everybody and he is Van Diesels brother. The can also turn boogers into sail boats and he is french.

Shooting toenails? If it can shoot anything, its probably not French.

A Simple CSS 3-Column Display

I’m currently redesigning a the front of a website for my employer and I decided to try a get going with a 3-column display within a block on the page with CSS. For those that aren’t familiar with CSS, doing a 3-column layout can be a real pain in the ass.

I, as all good netizens do, went to Google first to find a nice way to implement this. I figured that I could avoid reinventing the wheel if I could just find nice examples on the web. However all I came up with were display techniques that were for the whole page to be a three column layout. This is not what I wanted and scalling their techinques to a sub-block version wasn’t producing nice results.

I decided to go off on my own to solve this problem and I ended up finding a more elegant way to do this than any of the other examples on the web I could find.

Firefox Commerical

Here is yet another professional-looking commerical generously created by a fan of the product. This one is about Firefox. And it looks really good, the only problem is that there is not one good reason out there to ever make a commerical for Firefox.

Other than that nice work.

Google and Script Kiddies’ Love Child

Looks like Google has done it again. They made a special-looking version of Google’s page, with no new acutal features mind you, and posted it up on the web.

Google H4x0r, is the latest of these comedic(?) Google redesigns. (see Google and OS X’s Love Child)

Google yanked the OS X version after a few hours of reports on it started hitting the web. Anyone want to get down on the over-under on how long this one will last?
