Needed: A Note-Taking Extension for Thunderbird

I have an organizational problem. At work I live in Thunderbird. I get new orders, trouble tickets, website requests, all sorts of things all via email. Email notifications tell me to call customers, make changes to the website, run out to a customer’s location to work on their pc, etc, etc, etc. Bottom Line: the majority of my daily things to do come over email and I have no easy way to take notes or record what I’ve done for each email.
I need a Thunderbird Extension that adds a ‘Notes’ panel to each email. It does not need to be fancy, plain-text would work just as well as a rich-text window. A simple flat textbox sidepanel would work, but more handy would be a time-stampted tabbed panel, one note per tab. A tab where I can jot down that I talked to Bobby Sue from 9:30a to 10:15a and her computer is a piece of junk and that the problem with her Internet connection isn’t on our side. When I disconnect someone for non-pay there are a few pieces of info that I need to record in order to reinstate them easily when their check finally comes in. Currently this means that I duplicate all the disconnect info on my paper notepad – not efficient at all.

There is one extension that comes close: QuickNote. But this acts more as a Thunderbird-wide sticky note. Handy for general stuff, but hard to tie to specific emails. I’ve tried replying to myself with my notes but it makes my inbox a mess. It also requires an Internet connection to send the email reply which I do not always have depending on where I’m at. Could I save a draft and then try to remember to send all of them when I get back to the office? Yeah, but jeez – what a pain (not to mention having notes in a thousand places).

So this is my challenge to the Internet Community: Write me an extension to add per-email note taking functionality to Thunderbird. Now.

ICANN Approves .xxx Domains

Comming soon: The Red Light District for the Internet, the New Orleans for cyberspace…yourdomain.xxx

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) said it’s working with the ICM Registry to finalize remaining details, meaning the porn-friendly set of .xxx domains should be available by the end of the year. Other top-level domains still awaiting a decision from ICANN are .asia, .mail and .tel.

Stuart Lawley, chairman of the ICM Registry, could not be immediately reached for comment. In an interview last year, Lawley said that .xxx domain names would cost around $75 and come with no restrictions except that any sexually explicit content feature only adults. “Apart from child pornography, which is completely illegal, we’re really not in the content-monitoring business,” Lawley said.

In the broad scope of things does this ruling matter? Nope. Just because they make these .xxx domains doesn’t mean anyone has to use them. For every meandyourmondoingit.xxx there will be a meandyourmomdoingit.com. Its a nice thought to have all of the porn sites aligned like that, but that doesn’t mean its going to work.

Microsoft Kills “My” Folders

This isn’t really a major source for this, but I trust this guy…plus with a name like Hell Yeah Bitch! .com, who’s going to assume we have journalist integrity anyway?

According to Preston Gralla, Microsoft will kill the “my folders”

At long last, Microsoft has announced it will finally get rid of those annoying “My” names it tacks in front of folders. When Longhorn hits, there will be no folders named My Documents, My Pictures and so on. Instead, they’ll just be labeled Documents, Pictures, etc.
Finally! I’ve found those “My” folders nearly as annoying as the animated Search dog that crawls out from its kennel when you do an XP search, or the moronic “Clippy” paper clip that pops up when you ask for help in Office. In fact, there’s only one virtual being more annoying than Clippy — the universally reviled Jar Jar Binks. And George Lucas has managed to essentially make him vanish in the latest Star Wars pic.

Microsoft always tries to be too “cute-sy”. They think that giving a crappy search feature a cartoon dog will allow non-techies to use it better, but they really just need to make a better search.

Is anyone going to miss the My Folders? For that matter, does anyone actually use and like Clippy?

Random Blog of the Week #4

This weeks blog is City Rag.

I have always loved big cities (despite my choice of college) and I would love to live downtown somewhere in New York. Well I get my “downtown New York” fix by taking a quick look at City Rag.

What is City Rag? Well its a mix of a bunch of things. Its a personal blog about someone living in New York, eating, partying and hanging out with a dog. But its also an entertainment blog with posts about Madonna and Sharon Stone’s botox, Mary Kate’s giant and all kinds of weird news that noone should care about, but everyone does.

Keep reading for a great story / sample.
