ESPN.com Sucks
I don’t know if any of the people that read this site are also readers of ESPN.com, but I certainly am. In fact I read ESPN.com, in particular the baseball section, religiously…or at least I did up until about a week ago.
ESPN.com wants to make some money. < sarcasm >You can’t blame them, you just don’t see enough of ESPN. I mean they only have six channels, they need every penny they can get.< / sarcasm > To make money on their site, they have special articles and extended rumor report (mainly about trades and today’s MLB trading deadline) that are only viewable by EPSN Insiders. They have had this program for a long time now, and I had little to no problem with it. There were times that I thought of buying it, but since I only really cared about baseball, why would I want to pay the full price for all of the other sports that I felt I had enough coverage from by watching “Sportcenter”, and “NHL / NFL Tonight”? Turns out, more people thought the same way I did than either I nor ESPN thought. So, slowly at first, and now at a breakneck pace, more and more articles are being converted to “ESPN Insider” only. These are articles that have been free for years! First all of the Jayson Stark articles where turned to Insiders Only, then more and more until they finally got to the point where the really pissed me off: Peter Gammons.
Peter Gammons, who incidentally is being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame today, is one of my favorite national sports writers. He has the connections to get stories, has a nice style to his writing, and even at the age of 60, he is still telling people at the end of his columns about new and great bands. His only flaw being that he is a Boston fan…not a problem in that of itself, every writer is a fan of someone, but he tends to let it slip in too much…not a lot, but too much all the same.
Ok, ending tangent….now. The point is now that even Gammons articles are off limits for non-paying fans, all ESPN.com has become is a stale site for news that I heard reported before and a scoreboard. These are things I can get anywhere. ESPN.com used to be the place to go, and now its just a place.
Geek Holiday: Systems Administrator Day
Today, July 29th, is “Systems Administrator Day”. Make sure you give the guy that laughs at you, calls you dumb ,makes you get up out of your chair and then fixes your computer a pat on the back…or, if you work at my office, a crisp $20 bill.
Look at it this way: Love us or hate us, we own you.
Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story
I’m watching the Family Guy movie, “Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story” and its awesome. You should really go get it and watch it, because its funny as hell. Not that I know where you can go get it though. In fact I have no idea where you can get it. I mean, even if you did find out where to get it, you really shouldn’t get it because its bad to get movies that haven’t been released yet. Actually, you know, I’ve never seen this movie. I’m not even sure what movie I’m talking about anymore, but if I did remember, I definitely would not download it off of bittorrent and watch it because the Cardinals game was on earlier today and there is nothing to watch now.
[ The Family Guy movie is funny though. ]
Random Blog of the Week #10
This week’s blog is one that I have talked about, referenced, and have even been referenced on one occasion, so its due time that it becomes one of the “Random Blogs”.
Gadgetopia is one of those websites that I check every morning. It turns out, for my favorite websites, I’m not a huge RSS fan. So Gadgetopia, along with a few others, I check the old fashion way and actually go to the site. What is Gadgetopia? Its a tech blog. It has the standard news, but also some good editorials. For instance, I found the php templating engine, Smarty through Deane and the guys at Gadgetopia. There are more I’m sure, but what am I some weirdo that writes down where I find everything?

Man Questions His Masculinity After Shaving Cream Purchase
So some guy is traveling and buys some shaving cream, no big deal right? Well after he brings it home and uses it, the label starts to peel off and it reveals…
Well you will have to see for yourself: Transsexual Shaving Cream
So I guess he’s gay now right? Oh, I’m just kidding…but I’m pretty sure he’s at least bi.

Your Newsreader Subscription List?
While I’m on the subject of subscribing to more content than I can easily manage let’s talk about the 55 feeds on my Bloglines account. I’ve got to say that I love Bloglines. Thru it I’ve got updates on all my comics, apple news, tech news, guy stuff, all things HellYeahBitch, and even my brother’s Textamerica page.
What sites (other than HYB.com, of course) do you follow on a regular basis? Are you a bloglines fan or do you have suggestions for another service?
What’s your Podcast subscription list?
Before iTunes 4.9 added podcasting support I didn’t listen to all that much content. It was too difficult and scattered to keep track of the podcasts, and I only found the ones that were mentioned on some random blog. I followed the TWiT Cast and that was it. With iTunes though, my list of shows has grown substantially. At the moment I’m following Diggnation, Engadget, Gillmore Gang, The MacCast, MAKE, Battlestar Galactica, NPR Science Friday, Chris Pirillo and I’m still with the TWiTs.
I’m wondering for how long I can keep up with all the audio (I already don’t listen to every file I download) and what’s going to be first to be removed from my list. As far as I can tell from other people’s experiences it’s not uncommon to subscribe to a dozen feeds and whittle that down to 3-4 after a while.
Like every company wanting to push a product, Apple had good self-centric motives on adding support for podcasts. An average song is what? 2, 4 minutes max? But podcasts can go on for 30 minutes to an hour or more (damn long-winded GillmoreGang). If we’re just talking music moving from house to car is no big deal. I’m not involved in listening to music – it’s in the background so walking out on a song is easy. Podcasts though, it’s a show and I want to keep listening to that conversation wherever I go until the show is done.
Every time I have to pause a podcast because I have to take my dog on a walk, every time I have pause to go to work I get a twinge of frustration and irritation that I can’t keep listening to my show.
That twinge of frustration is immediately followed by the desire for an iPod.
And now they’ve got color screens (not like that has anything at all to do with podcasting, but dang it’s cool).
I’ll be placing an iPod order sometime soon.
Microsoft Adds Stupid Name To Its Stupid Operating System
Congratulations! You don’t have to wait endlessly, and hear about more and more things being cut out of Microsoft’s latest operating system Longhorn! Now you can wait endlessly and hear about more and more things being cut out of Windows Vista.
Thats right, today Microsoft made it official and gave the next version of Windows a real name as opposed to the development name “Longhorn”. Incredible news huh?! Not really. The math is still the same: “Longhorn” = “Windows Vista” = CRAP
Also, Vista is a pretty stupid name if you ask me. It sounds like a crappy hotel name, or something a slum-lord names a development to make it not sound as crappy as it is. Oh wait a minute…I just explained it to myself. I guess the name fits after all.
Japanese Advertising Is Weird

Star Wars has been involved in some weird advertising, but the latest advertising in Japan is some of the best. It involves Darth Vader hanging with school girls and Yoda stealing a guy’s girl (pictured above). Yoda is my personal favorite, but you can see the others at the blog of the guy that found these: Abroad In Japan
