The ‘Pirillo Effect’ has been taken from me.
At the time the Seattle Times article, quoting the term I coined “the Pirillo Effect”, ran, I was only jokingly annoyed. However, after some research, I’m not joking anymore.
The good news is that you can find the term Pirillo Effect everywhere on the web now. The bad news? Because the article that mentions the term I coined has no mention of me, there is not one link to the actual source. That sucks.
Take a look at the following searches for “Pirillo Effect”:
(They will all open up in a new window)
Google
Technorati
Ice Rocket
Google’s search results are more favorable to me and Chris’ site, which is good, but towards the bottom all the other sites that mention “The Pirillo Effect” all link to the Seattle Times article or Pirillo’s site, but not here.
Technorati and IceRockets searches are more damming to us. Most likely because they are more focused on blogs where as Google is giving more precedence in the search results to sites that have been around longer (hellyeahbitch.com and chris.pirillo.com) and not to new blogs. Out of the 11 results on Technorati, we are on there once, and its not even the original “Pirillo Effect” article, its just another post here where I mention it. Its the same story over at IceRocket’s search. Ridiculous.
Hell, this guy says the most interesting thing in the Seattle Times article is my un-quotted addition to the piece:
What’s striking for me is the article’s first paragraph, which states that if you write about Chris, he will most likely show up on your blog and leave a comment. Pretty cool for a guy with celeb status in the online world. Gotta start reading up on his content (I’m an avid listener and reader of his erstwhile TechTV/Call for Help colleague Leo Laporte).
Does this guy link back here? Nope. Its not his fault though, how could he know who wrote that? I wonder how many people just assume that the author of the Seattle Times piece, Kim Peterson?
The worst part of all of this is that there is pretty much nothing that can fix this. Suck.
