Its been about a month since Hell Yeah Bitch! .com became one of the masses and switched our hosting provider to Dreamhost. After the switch, I thought it might be nice to enter the site into the Dreamhost Site of the Month contest, mainly to get some exposure to our new hosting-mates. After submitting the site, I got a pleasant surprise: You know how I’m always asking for site feedback and never getting it? Well we got some now!

Like most comments made by the general public, not all of it was exactly helpful. If you read this site enough you will learn I’m a sucker for answering any and all comments, both constructive and stupid. So I figured I would take the time to comment on the comments we have received so far. (I have removed the user names of the comments just to be a nice guy)

Comment #1: “nice content, nice layout”

Comment #2: “The side bar is wonky. I am a bit taken aback by the URL name… very risk-eh. The writing is good though!”
Ah the “wonky” sidebar…I’ve actually already covered this. Lets continue.

Comment #3: “Fun site. Great name! Lose the background, it’s too busy for the otherwise clean design. Font color in sidebar too light, hard to read on my browser.”
Thanks, we love the name too…and rest assured, I darkened the sidebar type a few days ago. Hmm this guys a background hater…

Comment #4: “Seems a little like the Onion, similar style. Like the info though.”
Are we like the Onion? Whether we are or not, thats a great complement.

Comment #5: “sweet… it showcases some cool scripting (like the header rotations)”
Why thank you. The Header Submission works great too…just ask the 3 people that have used it!

Comment #6: “ok the site isn’t bad but with a URL like yours your going to exclude any serious traffic. Nuf said but there are some good web design elelments showcased in this site keep up the good work”
Ah yes…the first “wow your domain really has the work bitch in it huh?” comment. I agree that it does set us back a bit at times, but thats the sacrifice we make for 1. Comment #7: “Good stuff. Kind of funny… girly pictures every so often… hell yeah.”
Yup, girly pictures are awesome. We try to sneak one in there every once in a while for the keg party loving guys out there or the little keg party loving guy in all of us. (yes, I’m feeling very deep today)

Comment #8: “Vanilla layout, but above average content, light reading”
Look you can make all the crazy ass bubblegum peanut butter and sausage flavors you want, but there will always be a place for vanilla. That being said…I agree, but I’ve never happy with a layout for longer than 2 weeks.

Comment #9: “Standard blogware. Plse remove the blue bckgrnd.”
Yup, we use Movable Type, and at times I guess that shows (though I think we hide it a hell of a lot better than most). The interesting this about this comment is he is yet another background hater! Before we had a drab gradient background, I thought the blue brightened up the site a lot. No one else thinks so? Are there no phanticon backers anywhere??!!

Comment #11: “The content feel like standard random blogging – no true “voice” or focus”
Well, thats true…we have no focus. Our “focus” is a “lack of focus” (There’s me being deep again). There’s not one Voice, because we actually have more than one Voice. Hey everyone, Dan writes here too! He writes good stuff, just look at the byline and you can tell who wrote what.

…Now if you meant “Voice” as another way to say “Focus”, then I agree and I’ve covered that above.

Comment #15: “I get a DNS error – where did the site go?”
This guy gave us a 1 out of 10. A freaking 1. Why? Because of some apparent DNS error. How the hell is that my fault?! Don’t give us a one on that! You know what hurts most about that rating? The lack of respect! Ridiculous.

After all of the commenters votes were tallied, we have a Bart Simpson-esque D average rating of 6.2. Thats not all that surprising, people are usually pretty hard on this type of thing. But there are two main things to take out of this:
1. There were two comments on people that did not like the name, and two comments where they did like the name. The debate rages on.
2. The background haters!? Do you all really not like the background? I’m really surprised on this.
