Seriously, I Don’t Care About Sundance
Did you hear? The Sundance Film Festival is happening! Its happening right now! We’re missing it! What will we do?! Oh shit, I know…how about we just look at every other god damn website in the world. They will either have an “Official” Wrap Up / Summary / Podcast / VideoCast or they will have their own take on Sundance along with a smattering of links to the “Official” Wrap Up / Summary / Podcast / VideoCast. Wheew. That was really a close one. I know, its hard to look back, but clench down (Not too much, those are clean undies you are wearing.) and try to remember the world before blogs and podcasts and videocasts. I don’t know about you, but I picture those times as black and white with everyone sulking around the major cities of the world, trying to get through our work days so we could get home in one piece to catch the little report on Sundance on that night’s Entertainment Tonight. Not even the MTV or VH1 editions…the regular edition of ET! Ok, stop thinking about it. Its frightening me. How did we do it? How did I live my life in mid-to-late Januarys past without endless pictures of some schmuck standing in front of one of the movie showings where you can kind of make out Jennifer Aniston in the background with the caption “Me and Jen after the premier.”? Thats a world I never want to go back to. Never.
With my sarcasm muscles sufficiently stretched, I now ask the question seriously: What is the deal with all of the mindless Sundance coverage. Look at it. With the exception of the CityRag’s coverage of drunk girls in a hot tub, every bit of the coverage has been bland and pointless. Even if every piece of coverage was absolutely amazing, why do we care? Sure, its a cool movie festival. I love movies, I thought seriously about going to film school for a while, but I still don’t get it. If I can’t be there in person, watching the movies, I don’t care. Its also worth mentioning that after you take out Cinematical’s work, almost 100% of the rest of the coverage has nothing to do with the actual movies at all. Its all about what party Paris Hilton went to and what parking lot Jennifer Aniston goes to smoke at. Its shit like this why people hate blogs, and why 99% of podcasts are shit! I guess people feel like they should be caring about this stuff but I have some actual news for those people: You didn’t seem to care much last year, or any year before that, so why now? Why?!
If you are there in person, feel free to write up a review of the movies you saw on your blog or post some pictures on your flickr account, but for the sake of the internet, please stop there. No one gives a shit…or at least, they shouldn’t.
