After 355 wins, putting him at 8th all-time, Greg Maddux has decided to retire.

Despite the fact that the man has pitched for the two teams at the top of my “Most Hated List” Greg Maddux has always been, and probably will always be my favorite pitcher of all time. Why? Because every time he was on the field, he was the smartest guy there.

Here are two great Greg Maddux stories:

The first is a quote taken from Bleed Cubby Blue, but I’ve heard this story many times before:

There are literally dozens of famous and funny anecdotes about Maddux, many having to do with his downright spooky control and his amazing ability to outthink hitters. One involves a close game in which there were runners on first and third, one out and a left handed batter due up. Braves Manager Bobby Cox came out to the mound to ask him if he wanted to intentionally walk the batter to set up a double play. “No thanks,” Maddux replied and went on to describe theexact sequence of pitches he would throw the next two batters and what they would do. As a stunned Cox watched, he did almost exactly what he had said he would (the third out was a pop up that went just fair of third while Maddux had said it would be on the foul side of 3rd).

The second is a quote from a great ESPN the Magazine story on the magic of Maddux:

[W]hen Brad Penny and Maddux were teammates on the Dodgers, during the last two months of 2006, they had a conversation one day that led Penny to reach a stunning conclusion: This guy knows my stuff better than I do. It was eerie, really, how easily Maddux dissected Penny’s repertoire and suggested ways to maximize it. Penny, figuring he’d take advantage of the situation, asked Maddux to call a game for him against the Cubs. And so, on the night of Sept. 13, Penny glanced into the dugout before every delivery and found Maddux, who signaled the next pitch by looking toward different parts of the ballpark. Penny threw seven scoreless innings with no walks and beat the Cubs 6-0. “Maddux probably won’t tell you that story,” Penny says. He’s right.

Below is some of Maddux’s old baseball cards (I love that kind of stuff):

Lastly, I will leave you a video. Somehow after all these years and all those wins, Greg Maddux slipped by the commercial appeal that a Roger Clemens has had, but in this famous commercial Maddux and is rotation partner got themselves famous enough that even my Mom remembers it:

I estimate its almost exactly 5 years today that I bought my original XBox from the Wal-Mart in Kirksville while I was still in college, and the next day I went to work at the local Hastings and used my discount to buy a copy of World Series Baseball 2k3. Cut to 5 today I have played that game for 5 straight years and have amassed a overall record of 729-249 with 11 playoff appearances and 9 Championships all over 12 seasons (for a shortened 82 games a season) most of which on the “Expert” level.

Yeah, I like this game…a lot…and yes, I’ve tried almost every baseball game out since and none are as solid as this one.

With those stats in your head, you can imagine how sad I was when I sat down today to play the last few games of my 12th regular season and saw a wisp of smoke float out of my trusty XBox controller followed by that familiar smell of burning electronics. I looked for the source on my controller and then noticed that when I bent the cable you could clearly see sparks shooting out of a hole in the cable (see photo below). I’m no electrical engineer, but thats probably not good.

I know its just the controller and I do have a spare (though I hate it) but to me, this seems like a sign that after five straight years of use, its time for me to move on. I’ve been thinking about getting a 360 quite a bit lately anyway, and this might be the last straw.

I’m leaning hard about getting the $349 version with the 20 gb hard drive, the headset and such.

Any current 360 owners have thoughts on:

How well Connect360 works so I can play content from my Macs on there?

Any good baseball games?

Is there any chance I can move my saved baseball game to the new XBox?

What are the best shoot-em games?

I’m sad to see my XBox get old, but at least this way I can get Rock Band!

I just watched the new montage piece ESPN put together for the passing of Josh Hancock and they managed to fuck it up the moment it started by showing a clip, not of Josh Hancock, but of Brad Thompson on the mound. I’m not even talking about a distant shot where you would have to be supremely eagle-eyed to pick it out, they showed a upward panning shot from toe to head including a close-up face shot…of Brad Thompson all while Karl Ravich was reading the short history of Josh Hancock.

Stay classy ESPN.
