Mike Is Way Too Excited About Superman Returns

I want to take a moment this morning and confess my undying love for Bryan Singer and his two headed writing team. They made my dream of good X-Men movies come to life a few years ago and then, just yesterday I witnessed an event that I have been waiting for since 1987. (When last Superman movie, the lame-ass Superman IV came out. Luckily, I was only 6 and I didn’t know how bad it sucked, I just knew I like Superman.) Last night I saw Superman Returns and I loved every second of it. The effects were great and for once, the new effects actually helped the movie instead of just making exploding planets explode bigger. Today’s effects allowed the flying to look more “realistic” if that makes any sense. Also, unlike the 80′s movies, the writers didn’t get bored and just slap in weird extra powers: Since when can Superman make holograms of himself? Don’t get me started on the plastic-wrap S thing in Superman II! My biggest fear with this movie was whether or not the acting would suck and all though I don’t see any oscars being handed out to the cast I was pleasntly surprised by all the acting. Spacy was good as usual, but Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth were both good, although there were a few times when I felt that Routh was acting like Christopher Reeve playing Superman and not just playing Superman himself. I can’t fault the guy for that though, Reeve was perfect and the fact that the writers added in some of the lines that were in the 80′s movies made it hard at times to not seem like Reeve’s little brother. It was a very small price to pay for the inclusion of some of the great lines from the latter movies. (like “I hope this experience didn’t scare you away from flying…its still, statistically speaking, the safest was to travel.”) All in all this is the exact way I would have wanted Superman to return to the big screen…well I wouldn’t have done ONE thing that they did, but I don’t want to get into that for people that aren’t insane and go to see the movie by themselves on the day it was released.
Can I put my order in for at least 2 more of these movies with the original cast and crew before the studios get a hold of it and bring back Nuclear Man?
[Afterthought] Ebert wasn’t a fan. I see all of his points, and I full on agree with most of them, but I didn’t think that they added up to be that big of a problem.
The New Superman Returns Trailer

Can you feel it? We are only one little month away from the release of Superman Returns! Apparently to celebrate that fact, the good benevolent movie gods have bestowed upon us a new trailer for Superman Returns that is actually a preview of the movie and not just a picture of Superman. If you thought I was excited before for this movie, this trailer just amped me up to insane levels! The trailer appears before the new X-Men III movie (which I will be seeing this week if all goes as planned), and although I’m sure its headed for a high-def release on Apple’s trailer page, for now you can view it on good ole youtube.
Click through the jump to view the trailer and get so excited that you pee a little and then you wonder if you peed enough for your co-workers to notice a wet spot so you head to the bathroom and try to work on it but you inadvertently get your pants even more wet because the bathroom sink doesn’t have a little up-turned lip like good sink counter-tops should and any water that escapes the bowl of the sink runs right back to you and on to your pants because you are bent over the sink looking at the mirror and then you feel that horrible cold and wet sensation and you know this has all gone horribly wrong.
The Myth of Superman

Its no secret that I love Superman. Most everyone that knows me realizes that I have been waiting for the next Superman movie roughly about 30 minutes after first seeing the last one…actually maybe I started waiting for the next one about half way through the last one…Nuclear Man? What was that about? Anyway, for all you other Superman nuts or just mild Superman fans out there (and isn’t everyone at least a mild Superman fan) there is a great article up on Wired.com and in Wired Mag this month on the “Myth of Superman”
Excellent reading…go check it out. If your boss gets pissed, tell him I said it was cool.
Calvin Likes Snowmen

The last guy still using Angelfire to host his website for free has posted up a collection of all or at least most of the Calvin and Hobbes strips that involved Calvin and his “Snow Art”. Calvin and Hobbes are a comic I really miss and the times Calvin would make his disturbed snow men were some of my favorites. This collection is worth a look, unless you are a humorless troll, then you can just go back to your bridge…everyone else should check the link out right now to prepare for the coming onslaught of winter.
