Kevin Mitnick Has the Best Stuff in His Luggage!

Kevin Mitnick, the hacker that was famously jailed for 5 years after getting arrested on multiple cracking charges, was detained as he came into the country through the Atlanta airport from Columbia recently.  In the article detailing his “adventure” was this descirption of what they found in his bags:

In his luggage, they found a MacBook Pro, a Dell XPS M1210 laptop, an Asus 900 mini-laptop, three or four hard drives, numerous USB storage devices, some Bluetooth dongles, three iPhones, and four Nokia cell phones (with different SIM cards for different countries).

They also found a lock-picking kit and an HID proximity card spoofer that can be used to snag data stored on physical access cards by swiping it in front of them. The data can then be used to enter locked doors without having to make a forged access card. Mitnick says he used the device in a demonstration about security in his speech in Bogota, but that the customs agents’ eyes lit up when they saw it, thinking it was a credit card reader.

I’ve had several people I take way too much tech gear with me when I travel, but apparently I’m put to shame by Mitnick…I’m especially jealous of his Asus 900 that he takes along with his Mac Book Pro.  I wants me a “netbook” bad!

Happy 10th Birtday iMac

The original iMac intro (apparently before His Steveness found that giant box of black mock turtlenecks):

Apple has released a new commercial making fun of the “security” features that Vista, the newest version of Windows, baked in where instead of actually protecting you, they just constantly ask you questions about whats going on. Seems like one way to go except for the flaw that everyone just gets into Robot mode eventually and keeps clicking “Allow” out of sheer annoyance.

This might be my new all-time favorite Mac vs PC commercial. (via Daring Fireball)

Hollywood Doesn’t Understand Code

This was mentioned on BoingBoing today, but its too good not to pass along for the geeks that read this. Drivl.com has a great post featured on its front page today entitled “What code DOESN’T do in real life (that it does in the movies)

5. Code does not make blip noises as it appears on the screen
This goes for ANY text, not just code. When text appears on my monitor it doesn’t make blip sounds – this isn’t 1902 (or whenever monitors used to do that).
This is one of the most common offenses in Hollywood films, almost every movie that has a scene where a character is composing an email or surfing the net has the text make blippity-blip sounds as it appears. Do they have any idea how fucking irritating that would be in real life? This article alone would be like thirty thousand blippity-blips.

I’ll actually take the quote above a step further: Searches don’t make noise either! Every damn time someone searches for fingerprints in the database it makes this stupid whirring sound. Can you imagine if every Google search made that damn sound? Yeah, it sounds official, maybe it sounds like you are getting more done…but sweet tap-dancing christ that would get old.

Maybe I should make our new search have a whirring noise when running. Would that make it sound like its better?

Leah Culver is a Blonde Genius

Lean Culver of the surprisingly named leahculver.com, came up with a cream dream supreme of an idea. She had those zany, heavily laden with venture capitalist cash Web 2.0 companies sponsor her bid for a new laptop. At $150 a square inch, she sold roughly 40 ads and got her new laptop for free. After it was all said and done…and engraved…it looked like this.

My first thought: How can I get a sweet piece of this action? Could I make a St. Louis version? Would people actually by into this? Do you have to be a cute blond to get this idea off the ground?

Will these questions be answered? Be sure to keep checking Hell Yeah Bitch! .com for the thrilling conclusion where we find out the answers to those questions, in order, are: “Do your own.”, “Yes.”, “Probably not.”, and “It wouldn’t hurt.”

So who wants to by an add?

Here’s the video of the process.
Here’s more general info on engraving a laptop.
