TV.com launched a new redesign and of course everyone noticed that it looks just like Hulu.com. I just think its funny that on their new front page you can see the following (as of this writing):

Clearly this site needs a redesign because its become apparent that people have a bitch of a time using it when they are drunk…namely my girlfriend, her sister and the sister’s “bro” friends.

Recently I’ve been in a constant search for a new logo for Hell Yeah Bitch! .com. I like the look of our site, and I like the picture that has the “Hell Yeah Bitch! .com” stamp, but I want a square-ish logo that is suitable for stickers and tshirts and other such things. My first attempt, you can see above is the stamp version of the award winning “Be the Bug” photo that appeared on Nick At Nite. Its a fine logo, and I like that its my face, but I would prefer to have a logo that is a little more abstract but still has the feel of the site (oddly humorous, irreverent…). I love the feel of the laughing squid logo with its very basic design that really stands out. What I’m saying is: I need help.
Here’s what I’m searching for:
- Basic, one or two color design.
- If it can incorporate the full name at the bottom or top that would be sweet.
- Clean design.
- Funny or weird.
Any help would be appreciated and their could be money involved if the design was amazing and it wasn’t too crazy.
For any questions, feel free to email me at mike {asdkljhsdafasdf} hellyeahbitch.com (side note: “{asdkljhsdafasdf}” means “@”).

I am now in awe of Shaun Inman. In the latest itteration of his blog, he didn’t just redesign, he rebooted. The sparce new design of his blog belies its deep fluidness in which the design changes as the article gets older by the day. Each day the post gets lighter until, roughly 90 years from now, it becomes white on white. My quick two sentence abstraction simply doesn’t do this idea justice, read the full explanation of “the heap” here.
Well done Shaun.

I had no intentions of rebooting (rebooting is the web-hip way to say redesigning a site) Hell Yeah Bitch! .com. I’m totally cereal! But after looking at what others have done, my slight annoyance with the current design bubbled up into a hatred and it was time for a change. It turned out to be a pretty big change, as you can see.
I’m not going to list all that I’ve changed, because I’ve changed pretty much everything. But will point your attention to our new use of gravatars with your comments, our new list of most used tags, and the two emergency exits over the wings.
LIke always, I would love to hear any and all feedback. There are still some minor tweaks I have planned, but I wanted to get this design out and in the wild now instead of waiting for my busy weekend.

Hell Yeah Bitch! .com has been around for a while now. Actually over 3 years is really long in Internet Time! (Which by the way is 3.33 years to every 1…which explains why we all say: “Dial up! I haven’t used that in a decade!”) During all this time, like everyone else, we have always had a “Preview” button next to the submit button on the comment form. Its always there on nearly every blog and forum, but doesn’t anyone really every use it? I don’t. The last time I remember using the Preview button is when someone made the first AJAX-y style Preview, and I gave that a whirl (Its wasn’t all that exciting if you were wondering), thats it. So answer me this fair readers: Do you use the “Preview” button on comment forms?
What reason is there to use it? Checking spelling / grammar seems to be the most common response, but that makes little to no sense since you can re-read what you wrote in the text field just as easily as you can on a preview page. I guess “seeing what the final product will look like” is a valid response, but since most places don’t allow much, or any use of HTML code in comments, its not going to look all that different than when you wrote it, and if it does, you won’t be able to do anything about it anyway. So is there a point? Do we need this? Do we want this? Will you feel naked with out the useless Preview button staring at you while writing a comment?
Let me know what you think, I’m interested in the seemingly un-interesting today.

Easily my favorite movie so far this year is Jason Reitman’s Thank You For Smoking. It was a funny, well written and well acted movie that was well worth the 6 bucks I spent on it at the Independent movie theatre near my apartment (The Tivoli, for those in St. Louis). But something else I really liked was the cool opening credits that all mimicked the fonts and designs of old cigarette boxes. I was intrigued enough to even ponder on working some of those design elements into this very site…but how would I ever find the fonts? Typographi to the rescue! Their article, Font Spotting the Thank You for Smoking Titles, breaks it all down. Where would the world be without font geeks?

I don’t know if you heard, but Apple is making a bit of press lately with their 2 new iPods (video, and nano) and their new amazing iMac. Of course, now Time magazine has continued their trend of having a big write up on how great Apple is in their latest issue (along with naming whatever new Apple item as their “Gadget of the Week”). Time’s cover story is about how Apple designs their amazing devices and how that design process differs from almost every other company. This is all fine and good execpt I can’t read the article because I don’t have a Time subscription. Bastards.

Anyone with a Time subscription want to help me out with a way to read this?
UPDATE: It has come to my attention that you can read the full article for free on Time Canada’s site. Enjoy!
